Puerto Rico dominated Mexico on Friday in straight sets at Juan "Pachín" Vicens Auditorium in Ponce

Ponce, Puerto Rico, May 24, 2014 – Puerto Rico secured a spot in the decisive match of the NORCECA Men’s World Championship Qualification Tournament Pool R with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Mexico on Friday.

Puerto Rico showed an aggressive game from the start led by the attack of Maurice Torres and Juan Figueroa who finished with 12 points apiece. Mexico’s Carlos Guerra was the best scorer of the defeated side with 10 points.

Mexico presented more resistance in the second set but Puerto Rico was superior with better combinations led by the setter Eduardo Goas. The home team dominated the first and third sets without difficulties.

“I am not completely satisfied,” Puerto Rican Coach David Aleman stated. “We need to make adjustments and improve our reception. We have to synchronize better with the middle players to improve our offensive options.”

“We were not consistent with our reception and that created a lot of problems,” Mexican Coach Sergio Hernández said.

In the other match of Friday, Bahamas defeated Honduras in straight sets 25-22, 25-19, 25-22.

Bahamas had three players with double figures in scoring to go with a great defensive control at the net totaling 14 blocks.
