Scorers' battle goes to China in a thrilling Day 3 closure

 

Elkotb's astonishing display wasn't enough for Egypt to defeat China

Katowice and Gdansk, Poland, September 1, 2014 - In what turned out to be a fantastic ending for a day of nail-biting action at FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland, China and Egypt settled new scoring records for the tournament, as the Asians prevailed in the end. Finland and Korea also enjoyed some good performances at their victories.

Brazil, Russia and Bulgaria completed the winners’ list for Day 3 action in Poland, all cruising in straight sets and achieving a perfect start in a remarkable tournament.


Key Points

China’s Zhi Yuan smashed a tournament-high total of 31 points in four sets, narrowly missing an exact average of 8 points per set. For Egypt, Ahmed Elkotb uncorked 23 tallies having played a little over than two sets. 


Korea broke the tie against Tunisia in head-to-head numbers and now lead 2-1, pushed by a great performance of Chul-Woo Park, who nailed 24 points. 


Olli-Pekka Ojansivu was the man of the match for Finland, as he entered the court in the first set and led the charge with 23 kills, providing a great comeback for the Finns who were 0-2 against Cuba. 


Brazil overpowered Germany in every department of the game and now have won 25 out of their last 29 World Championship matches. 


Russian powerhouse Dmitry Muserskiy spiked almost perfectly and also fired 5 aces to guide his side to a win over a persistent Canada. 


To crush Mexico in straight sets, Bulgaria had not only one but two main scorers, as Todor Aleksiev and Tsvetan Sokolov finished leveled with 14 points each.
