Under Head Coach Julio Velasco in 2016, the Argentina men's national team showed its quality, finishing fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. They also won bronze at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, their highest placing in seven appearances at the Games.
Argentina’s first World Championship appearance came in 1960 when the team finished 11th in Rio, and this year marks the nation’s 12th appearance at the event. Argentina’s highest-ranked finish in the competition was in 1982 when, as hosts they won a bronze medal following a 3-0 win over Japan in the third-place playoff.
Fourth remains Argentina’s highest finish in the FIVB World League, when they lost to hosts Poland in the 2011 bronze medal match. They have also ranked fifth on two occasions, in 2009 and 2010.
Argentina ranked 14th in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League this year, with stand out victories over Italy, Australia and Brazil, and the team will be hoping to build on these performances at the 2018 FIVB World Championship this September.
