Puerto Rico will compete this year in the FIVB World Championship for the fifth time. After making their debut in 1974, Puerto Rico returned to the competition only in 2006, when they finished an all-time high of 12th.
Puerto Rico have taken part four times in the FIVB World League (their best finish 11th in their debut in 2011) and once in the FIVB World Cup (6th in 2007).
Regionally, Puerto Rico have been most successfull in the Central American & Caribbean Games, where they have four gold medals, in 2002, 2006, 2010 and most recently in 2018 after beating Colombia 3-0 in the final.
They won bronze at the 2015 North, Central America and Caribbean (NORCECA) Championship after beating hosts Mexico 3-1 for third place, but did not compete in the latest edition of the competition in 2017.
Puerto Rico's best finish at the Pan-American Games is fourth, after losing 3-1 to Canada in the latest edition in 2015.
