Choosing Lotman was a good call for USA's John Speraw

Paul Lotman's performance was highlighted by USA coach John Speraw

Héctor Soto - Puerto Rico captain: "There's not a lot we can say about this match. We didn't play well in reception and serve. We're the smallest team in this World Championship pool and if we don't have a decent reception, it's difficult to play with the rest. (On being on the bench during this game) Of course it's not a pleasant feeling, but I still feel good, my legs work well for my 36 years-old and I want to continue playing and improving as an outside hitter."

David Lee - USA captain: "We played great today, especially from the service line, that was the biggest difference today. We did a lot of scouting, watched a lot of videos to be well prepared against Puerto Rico. Our serving and scouting helped us today. Puerto Rico's adjustments made it more difficult for us in the third set, new players received better and this helped them to play their style."

David Alemán - Puerto Rico coach: "I think captains said it all. We knew Americans will play hard today after their loss against Iran. Their service made it difficult to play our side out. Later I've changed players to see if they can do better, and it worked for a while but wasn't enough to turn over this result. We will see what plan we have for the next games."

John Speraw - USA coach: "We're very happy with a win that came in a different way than I expected. We had to play a team we know very well, to face friends and we expected this match not to be an easy one, but our serve let us play at a very high level. I wanted to try Paul Lotman and have a look at him today. This turned out to be a good decision as he played great, stabilized our reception. We have three outside hitters and each one of them bring different things to our game."
