Since Day 1, Poland have shown how capable they are making it to the top of the competition - a solid performance with minimum set-losses
Lausanne, Switzerland, September 7, 2014 – Poland bested the other teams, in terms of minimum set-losses in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, making a strong statement of being a top contender for the title this edition.
Poland have managed to maintain its near perfect win-record after a their set-defeat against Cameroon. Poland easily managed Argentina in straight sets to top their Pool A standings.
Meanwhile, Brazil lost two sets against Korea on Saturday and another set on Sunday against World Championship final round rivals Cuba. Nonetheless, Brazil stayed on top of Pool B.
Likewise, Russia initially lost to Mexico followed by the excellent comeback on the fifth set against Bulgaria in Pool C. France are still on top, closely followed by Iran in Pool D.
Australian success with five-setters – Australia played their 28th World Championship match and defeated Venezuela in a five-setter. This match is Australia’s second five-setter in the competition since their 3-2 win against Turkey in 1998.
Mexico snap losing streak – Mexico prevailed in their match against Egypt to end their six-match losing streak at the World Championship.
France’s double 66 – France claimed their 66th victory in the World Championship after their five-setter with Belgium. The number of victories equals their number of defeats at the World Championship.
Finland’s consistency in the World Championship – Finland claimed their third victory in the 2014 edition and have now won three or four matches at every edition they attended, since only one victory they earned in 1962.
Germany match 2006 record – Germany equalled their record set in 2006 of winning four successive World Championship matches as unified Germany with a straight sets win against Korea.
Hitting four in a row – Canada made a straight sets win against China to win four consecutive World Championship matches for the second time in history. They won four in a row in 1974.
Poland remain unbeaten – Poland are still unbeaten at the 2014 World Championship after five matches. Poland have lost only one set. They are the only team to have lost only one set in the first round matches of the 2014 World Championship.
Iran match 1970 record in victories – Iran beat Puerto Rico in straight sets and have won four matches in the World Championship for the second time in their team history after their four wins in 1970.
USA win-loss alternation – USA continued with their World Championship alternation with their first World Championship victory against Italy since 1982.
Russian recovery in five-setters – For the second time and for the first time in 52 years, Russia/Soviet Union won a World Championship match after trailing 2-0. In 1962, they defeated Germany 3-2.
Brazil continue to get better – For the first time since 1998, Brazil started a World Championship with five successive victories.
Serbia match 2010 record on consecutive victories – Serbia have now won four matches in a row at the World Championship, just like they did in 2010.
