Poland surge up rankings after gold medal success

Poland's gold medal means they move up two places in the ranking to third

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 24, 2014 – Poland have risen two places in the senior men’s world ranking to third following a triumphant gold medal performance in front of their home fans at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship as bronze medallists Germany improved their placing in the top 10 alongside Argentina and Iran.

Brazil remain world No.1 after picking up silver followed by Russia, despite a disappointing fifth-place finish. However, outside of this, every place in the top 20 has been reshuffled.

Italy and USA drop one spot to No.4 and No.5 respectively as both failed to make the final six. But Germany move up three places to No.7 following their sensational bronze medal win in Katowice. Argentina sit just above them at No.6 after finishing 11th. The ever-improving Iran round out the top 10 after they claimed sixth at the World Championship, their best performance at the tournament.

France finished their campaign with a disappointing loss to the Germans in the bronze medal match, but can take some heart after moving up to No.12. Canada also moved up to No.14 following their best ever result of seventh in Poland while Korea, China and Finland, now sit No.16 and joint-No.17, the latter gaining nine places. Belgium move up four spots to No.20 after finishing the tournament in 17th.

Cuba fell four places and now sit No.11 while Australia and Tunisia also drop a place each to No.13 and No.15.

However, it is lower down the rankings where the biggest movements have occurred. The Czech Republic fall 16 places to No.34 after failing to qualify for the World Championship. Bahrain were the biggest movers as they race 74 places up to No.39. Cyprus, F.Y.R. Macedonia and Kuwait all gained 64 places and stand joint-No.53. South Africa were the biggest losers, falling 72 spots to No.124.
