The Polish supporters came in full force to support their team to qualify for the semifinals of the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship
Lausanne, Switzerland, September 18, 2014 – The two matches in Pools G and H proved to be exciting as both matches ended in five-setters to cap the third round and confirm the semifinalists for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
France endured a tough five-set clash with Iran in Pool G, but needed to win only a set to get the second spot in the final four, while Poland ended Russia’s hopes after their win in the first two sets, and the eventual 3-2 win of their match in Pool H.
Poland, France and Germany will join Brazil to complete the cast of semifinalists for this edition of the World Championship.
France break win-record – France have won nine matches in a single World Championship for the first time. The most that the European squad won was eight victories in 2006. The Frenchmen are in the semifinal of the World Championship for the second time following their 2002 berth. Iran would have to settle to play for fifth place against the tough Russian squad. The Iranians lost two matches in a row at the World Championship for the first time since the last match of 2006 and the first match of 2010.
Poland’s four successive five-set matches – Poland have become the first ever team to win four consecutive World Championship five-set matches. Poland started their tough clashes against Iran, then France, then with defending champions Brazil, and the latest was against Russia. Poland have reached the semifinals of the World Championship once before in 2006, when they defeated Bulgaria 3-1. They eventually lost the final in straight sets against Brazil.
