Middle blocker David Lee is a two-time Olympian who was born in 1982 in Alpine, Calif., which is also his hometown. He played collegiate volleyball for Long Beach State University. He joined the U.S. National Team in 2003, but became a part-time starter in 2007 and a full-time starter in 2008 as he helped the U.S. win gold medals at the FIVB World League and Olympic Games.
At the 2008 Olympic Games, David (203cm and 105kg) finished second among all blockers with 33 kill blocks for an average of 1 per set. In the United States' semifinal match against Russia, Lee came up big in the fifth set, tallying a kill and block on consecutive plays to yield a 13-12 advantage. After Russia tied the set at 13-all, Lee ended the match with a kill and block. He scored four of his 12 points in the final five points of the match.
Lee was one of three players who competed in all 58 sets of the 2011 FIVB World League. He was the leading blocker for the U.S. Men with 52 in 58 sets for an average of 0.90 blocks per set. He finished pool play second among all blockers. Lee finished World League as the United States’ fourth-leading scorer with 142 points on 83 kills (0.462 hitting efficiency, 53.2 kill percent), 52 blocks and seven aces. He was also named the Best Blocker of the 2011 NORCECA Continental Championship, where the U.S. finished second and qualified for the World Cup.
In 2012, Lee played in his second Olympic Games as the U.S. finished fifth.
Lee was named Best Blocker at the 2014 World League Final Round as the U.S. won the gold medal for the second time in team history.
Lee, who is single, has played for clubs in Turkey, Italy, Russia and China.
