The Egyptians will look to bring some of their continental success to the global stage at the 2014 World Championship – a tournament where their highest finish in seven attempts came with 13th place in Italy in 2010.
Winners of the last five African Championships (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013), and seven overall, the nation secured their fourth straight World Championship competition berth when they won all four matches at the qualifying event in Nairobi in February 2014.
A powerhouse in Africa, on the world stage Egypt’s recent performances include a 12th-place finish at the 2011 World Cup and 11th at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Egypt has a long volleyball history and was the first country to join the African Volleyball Federation. Before Africa had a solid volleyball structure, Egypt competed in the 1955 and 1958 European Championships, and later sent an A and B team to the 1971 African Championship.
It looks likely that Egypt will build on this rich history in the coming years. Their youth, junior and U23 teams all qualified for their respective World Championships in 2013.
