The Iranian men's team continues to rise after impressive performances in recent years.
This includes their first-ever appearance in the World League finals in 2014, which ended in a fourth-place finish after a loss to Italy in the bronze medal match, as well as their Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, where they finished fifth.
At this year's inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League Iran ranked 10th, following a 7-8 record in pool play.
Iran have featured in the FIVB Volleyball World Championship for the past three years, finishing sixth at the 2014 edition in Poland, where a strong Russian side defeated them in the final round.
They have also enjoyed recent continental success, defeating Japan 3-1 in 2014 to win gold at the Asian Games in Incheon.
At the Asian Championships Iran have struck gold twice. The first of these was at home in Tehran in 2011, with a rousing 3-1 victory over China in the final. Two years later in Dubai, Iran retained its titles with a straight sets win against Korea.
