Germany can celebrate their first victory in 2014 World Championship
Katowice, Poland, September 3, 2014 – Opposite spiker György Grozer conduct World No 10, Germany to beat No 7 Cuba 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-19) in day 5 of the 2014 FIVB Men's World Championship at Spodek Hall in Katowice, Poland on Wednesday.
Germany improved their won- loss ratio after two matches to 1-1, while Cuba dropped to 0-2.
György Grozer led the match and German scorers with 19 points including 4 ace services followed by Denys Kaliberda 10. From The Cuban side, outside hitter Ernesto Jimenez scored 15 points as best scorer from his side.
What made the difference was the big dominance for the German team in serving and blocking skills as the winners had 5/2 advance in aces, and 12/4 in blocking items.

The opening point of the first set was scored by György Grozer with the astonishing spike. Displaying his power, Grozer accompanied by Güthör led his team throughout the first set, running ahead 13-9. Single Cuba’s fierce spikes and blocks by David Fiel and Leandro Macias, didn’t stop German power. Great reception and effectively played blocked by Sebastian Schwarz and Marcus Böhme helped German with controlling the game till the end of set number one, finished by Grozer with an astonishing left-wing spike.
The first point in the second set scored by Cubans was quickly followed by a huge Sebastian Schwarz’s spike. Cuba couldn’t have found an effective way of answering for almost perfect German display what forced Rodolfo Sanchez to call the first timeout at 5-2. However, this short break didn’t help Cuba with refocusing. Santiago Uriarte did their best with catching up the score and followed by David Fiel, Cuba managed to come closer (10-11), but it didn’t weaken Germany, who rebuilt their leading and run ahead 16-12 at the second technical timeout. Staying focused till the end of the second set, Germans won it 25-21.
Playing much focused from the beginning of the third set both teams tried to find a method for gaining some comfortable leading. Germany did it after astonishing Spike by Denys Kaliberda, but Cuba didn’t stay owing, catching up at 5-5. Nonetheless, they couldn’t have forced German attack-Santiago Uriarte’s spike blocked by the opponent led Germans ahead 8-5 at the first technical timeout. Adding some huge spikes by Denis Kaliberda and Cuba’s mistakes, Germany led ahead 16-12 at the second technical timeout and continued this lading throughout the next minutes, finishing third set 25-19 and the whole match 3-0.
