World Championship victory boosts interest in Polish League

The Ergo Arena in Gdansk is no stranger to big crowds

Warsaw, Poland, February 6, 2015 – Poland’s victory in the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship has resulted in a boost to attendances in the domestic volleyball league, the PlusLiga, most notably when LOTOS Trefl Gdansk broke the league record for attendance in the Ergo Arena.

A total of 10,635 fans flocked to the venue in Gdansk to watch LOTOS Trefl Gdansk’s match against PGE Belchatow and improve LOTOS Trefl Gdansk’s previous record crowd of 7,313 spectators, which was set in September 2011 against PGE Skra.

The increased number clearly had an effect on the home team who finished with a 3-1 victory and it is the second best attendance in the Polish League after the 11,000 that attended the match between PGE Skra meeting and Asseco Resovia Rzeszow at Atlas Arena in Lodz.

“When the arena is filled from top to bottom with over 10,000 fans, it really is something special,” LOTOS Trefl Gdansk’s marketing manager Malgorzata Ciszewska said. “When you saw all the fans cheering for Gdansk it really sent a tingle down the spine and I’m sure inspired the players to play their best.”
