Middle blocker David Smith was born in Panorama City, Calif., and raised in Saugus. He played college volleyball for UC Irvine. In 2007, he helped Irvine win the NCAA National Championship. He was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. He was named first team All-American and first team All-MPSF and led the nation with a .559 hitting percentage, a new UCI season record.
Smith played for the 2004 and '05 U.S. junior national teams. He also played on the 2007 World University Games team that won a bronze medal.
Smith joined the U.S. National Team in 2009 and helped it win the World Championship qualifier that year and also played in World League matches. In 2010, he helped the team to a gold medal at the Pan American Cup and in 2011 he helped them win silver. In 2012. he was a backup middle blocker on the World League and Olympic teams.
David was born with mild-to-severe hearing loss. He wears hearing aids to assist him on and off the court. His wife's name is Kelli. They  have a son named Cohen born in 2012. Smith played in Spain during the winters of 2009-10 and 2010-11. During the winter of 2011-12, 2012-2013 and 2013-14 he played for Tours Volley-ball in France.
